In many organisations risk assessment for chemical hazards is not comprehensive or not up to date because the health and safety team simply cannot monitor every task and workplace change. The only person in a position to do this is the manager controlling a particular work area. However, they often do not have the knowledge or tools to conduct an effective risk assessment for chemical exposure.
Our Basic Risk Assessment for Chemical Hazards (BRACH) system has been developed to meet the needs of the average manager. It allows them to:
Identify where within their workplace exposure (respiratory, skin and biohazards) is occurring (or might occur)
To quickly conduct a “first pass” risk assessment
Identify whether control measures are required
It is based around a sequence of questions that lead the manager to decide if there is no significant risk, a risk which they need to control or a very significant risk where they need to request help from the health and safety team
The form used is lodged with the health and safety team who thus have an overview of what risk assessments are being made and can decide when they need to become involved. It also provides a comprehensive audit trail.
