Health Surveilance
Health Surveilance
We depend upon our skin functioning correctly to prevent many things (e.g. chemicals, weather) from causing damage to health. A skin that is not in good condition may not be able to prevent or resist damage. Maintaining skin in optimum working condition is important in maintaining workers' health and their ability to perform. There are many considerations when deciding whether a skin health surveillance system is necessary for
your organisation.

•

Legal requirements – regulations, such as COSHH, stipulate that if there is a chance of exposure to substances that can cause skin problems we need to conduct skin health surveillance. Even water in the right circumstances can do this.

•
Make life easier – it is easier to take action and prevent problems than it is to deal with the problems once they arise

•
Economic sense – If we have a worker that is absent or not working efficiently because of skin problems there will be an effect on production

•

Compensation – It makes sense to ensure that none of our workers' skin ever gets to the stage where compensation is necessary

There are several methods we can use for skin health surveillance:

•
Questionnaires – Vital for obtaining background information that can aid identifying the cause and finding solutions.

•
Visual and Tactile assessment – Simple and possible in all situations for all visible skin problems but does not detect sub-clinical damage so not effective for preventing problems.

•
Skin condition measurement – simple, safe, non-invasive measurements but requires acclimatization before measurements. Can identify individuals with sub-clinical damage so that problems can be prevented. Provides quantitative data for better assessment of problems and evaluation of interventions.

We have developed a range of products that can aid you in ensuring that problems are effectively prevented and your health surveillance system complies with the regulations. These products include:
