Dermatological Engineering
Engineering
Dermatological Engineering combines the knowledge of medical specialists (dermatologists, immunologists, toxicologists) and scientists (biologists, chemists) with the expertise of the engineer or technologist to structure a workplace so that any risks of damage to health from skin exposure is eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level. Dermatological Engineering offers a number of benefits:-

Intrinsically safe
Designing the workplace and equipment in such a way that skin exposure is eliminated at source means that high standards are maintained independent of individual worker behaviour. Human error is largely eliminated as a concern

Regulatory compliance
In most countries regulations require control of chemical exposure to be by technical measures, so far as practicable. Dermatological engineering helps achieve this.

Fail-to-safe
With the dermatological engineering approach it is possible to design systems so that failures do not result in exposure likely to cause damage to health. No other approach can do this.

Reduced reliance on personal protective equipment
Personal protective equipment, e.g. gloves, is expensive and uncertain in the level of protection it provides. Dermatological engineering strives to ensure that PPE is used only where unavoidable and then if possible only as a support measure.

Reduced management time
Since the system is intrinsically safe, management time monitoring worker behaviour, glove use etc. is largely eliminated. This saves money.

Reduced costs
Our experience shows that in many situations the introduction of the dermatological engineering approach has reduced actual operating costs, irrespective of the reduction in costs due to the elimination of damage to health from skin exposure.

Within the concept of dermatological engineering EnviroDerm Services provides a range of services.
